As a Vigneron and dreamer, I decided many years ago to plant a vineyard dedicated to grape varieties not normally planted in Australia, which would tolerate the changing patterns in climate that I had been experienced during my time on the land. We had already been done this path with Italian grape varieties (Ricca Terra), but journey of exploration was still burning bright. What was next? What grape varieties could brave out the droughts and baking heat of Australia’s climate and still make great wine? Portugal came to mind, in particular, Portuguese grape varieties. That dream was the beginning of Terra do Rio.
The Portuguese grape varieties we selected and planted include; Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Amarela, Monvedro, Souzão, Alvarinho and Arinto. Today this vineyard is referred to as the ‘Portuguese Paddock’ and we believe it to be the only vineyard of its type in Australia.
Terra do Rio, meaning Land of the River, which best describes the landscape of the Portuguese Paddock, that being the Riverland, South Australia. The Murray River that meanders across the southeast corner of Australia provided life to the environment, community and to our small farm. Therefore, it is unquestionable that we continue to strive to take responsible actions to protect such a precious treasure as the Murray River. I feel we have, and will, continue to do our bit to protect the Murray River through the planting of grape varieties that are more suited to our climate.
Wine to be released (2019 Vintage): Tina Cão, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Rosé and a Red Field Blend.
